Contour Biennale 9, January 2019-October 2019

BLACK GOLD is a public work that asks for your care and attention. BLACK GOLD is essentially a box, a container of radical possibility. A site that asks participants to take a bold and conscious step towards the future.

Inside the box is placed organic waste (food, leaves, paper, cardboard, regrets, wishes, our collective shadows..) The project takes place over time, starting with the first full moon of 2019 and ending with a harvest moon public ritual in the fall. BLACK GOLD gives visitors an opportunity to take part and contribute in the action and thus have an experience of consciously taking care of what we consume.

The edges of the box are strong yet porous: in effect it is breathing. We can stand near it and listen, for it is also a music box complete with brass chimes reminiscent of the carillons of Mechelen. Although the edges are rigid, inside is an interminable process of alchemy and magic. To open ourselves to the outer world, we need to reconcile with our own inner changes and development, for we too are always changing, coming and going as part of this living earth.
