GOLD SEED VAULT (PLANTABLE PAINTING SERIES)

Native seeds are safely contained within these 24-carat gold leaf monochromes. When the work is removed from the wall and placed in the earth, seedlings will push through the gold leaf surface. This work confronts the very kernel of our value systems and begs the question: where is the true value, in the gold or in the seed?

“To me, there’s beauty and sensuality in the work, as there is beauty and sensuality in a flower. That by itself shows Navarro’s talent. But in addition, there’s a meaning, brought in a poetic way. Not pedantic or preachy, but humble. Not pessimistic, but giving hope and perspective.

Navarro succeeds to make a portrait of a small part of the world we live in. But at the same time she shows a portrait of herself, suggesting the way she looks at today’s importance of nature versus the material world of splendor and gold.

Ideas and emotions are coming out of the painting in a poetic way. It’s about growing, expecting, trust, slowness. On the other side it is all quite simple. The work is open. It is free. It doesn’t need a textbook to be understood, although some knowledge of the context might be helpful, if not essential. As I watch the golden surface, I finally see a portrait of me. Looking for gold. Looking for light. Looking for seeds. Looking for nature. Looking for involvement. That’s why this great work of art moved me.”
